i find it funny that we’re in an era of eddie being at a weird cross roads with a girlfriend that he doesn’t want to actually be That Serious with… and buck is in the beginning stages of a relationship with a character they brought back from previous seasons.
it’s… uh almost like we’ve circled back around to post shooting…
this is actually really really likely to be a buddie storyline 2.0!!
so if we are now post-shooting, what may be in the cards for season 8 is the equivalent of Eddie trapped in a room and Buck breaking a door down to get in the room!
which could be (spec inspired by this post) Eddie trapped inside a room (or elevator or wherever) and Buck desperately trying to get to him (maybe Eddie is hurt, like in the shooting). and maybe Buck does get to him and perhaps he then gets trapped too. and while they're trapped together, maybe Eddie thinks rescue will not come in time for him and he doesn't want to die without telling Buck what he really feels for him, so he does and then passes out. Buck screams "EDDIE!!!" and... roll credits, this is how s8's mid-season finale ends.
It's come to my attention that some folks don't know about Willow and Tara. If you care about Buck and Eddie, it's worth your time to learn about them, especially if you're queer.
Let me tell you a story about a time when queer people, queer women in particular, were essentially non-existent in the media — tv, movies, hardly anywhere. And along came Buffy, which gave us a nuanced, lovely, richly developed love story between two young women. Willow and Tara were main characters, and one of the core couples on the show, for many years. They shared one of the very first lesbian kisses on network television. Believe me when I tell you there was nothing — nothing even remotely close — when it came to queer representation on television at the time. Willow and Tara meant a great deal, to a great number of queer people. Still do.
When I tell you the rage and fury that welled up in the wake of Tara's murder. Because this time the queers fought back, demanded more and better stories as atonement. The-powers-that-be had, for the first time, given us something that was ours, making a real effort to tell our stories. So many queer folks felt seen and validated in ways we never had before. And then they killed her. The hurt and grief were real and sting to this day (I fully teared up making this post). But there is no doubt in my mind that the backlash absolutely led to the exponential growth in queer representation that happened after.
Willow and Tara's importance to queer culture — their love story and Tara's death — cannot be overstated. They have a place in the Legendary Queer Canon reserved for very few.
When I tell you that the second Eddie's blood hit Buck's face, I felt whichever queer(s) at 911 were responsible for making this happen — I felt them reaching through the screen to say: let's work through our Willow and Tara trauma together.
These gays are going to live.
I know I am always on my bullshit about how everything 911 does is on purpose. But this? Was intentional. Like nothing I have ever seen. The way they (so lovingly, romantically) filmed Eddie being shot in front of Buck wasn't just an allusion to some other tv show. They paid homage to legendary queer canon.
So, apparently Tim Minear was a producer and writer for Angel, which was a Buffy the Vampire Slayer spinoff.
I'll be goddamned if Tim isn't out here atoning for Joss Whedon's crimes against the queer community with Buck and Eddie's love story. Well, well, well.
I got lost in my old Buffy trauma making this post and left out a critical parallel (thanks to the folks who reminded me): the very first words after being shot were concern for their beloved.
I am, not happy exactly, but comforted by how many of you are also still so affected by Tara's death. Many of us were teenagers when we watched this happen the first time — little baby queers, maybe not yet sure of ourselves, in a place of burgeoning self-discovery but still with so much self-doubt and fear. Thank you for sharing your stories — I read every single one.
And to all the Buffy fans discovering 911 though this post? What a delight. Welcome! Buck and Eddie are Going Through It right now, but I'm telling you, this one is different. It's hard to explain, and we're all kind of shell-shocked at the moment, but something is happening with Buck and Eddie that none of us have ever seen before.
It really does appear that these gays are not only going to live, they're going to thrive.
thinking about how i've always believed eddie was lying in 6x12 when he told buck he couldn't remember the shooting because if he really admitted what he remembered out loud it would reveal far too much. and how now that's almost feasible as an excuse if it ever gets brought up again because, like everyone's been saying, how could eddie have talked about it in a way that wouldn't make it sound like more???? how could he talk about the fact that buck was the last thing he saw before he lost consciousness and how he suddenly understood what carla meant when she told him to follow his heart????? during the cemetery talk in 6x15 he tells buck experiences like that change you with the most inscrutable expression on his face and i am once again asking, eddie diaz what changed in you??!?!?!??
Bring this back on today of all days because they literally could not put Eddie in Buck’s subconscious because it would be gay and that’s almost confirmed by cast.
Every other character could but in it, but Eddie had to be off screen “back to Texas” because if we saw Eddie in Buck’s mind he would have been in that man’s arms.
